Sustainability is our tradition

Listuguj Fisheries

Since time immemorial, the L’nu (Mi’gmaq) have developed a profound relationship with the sea.  Our values and culture were shaped by that relationship and helped us develop the principle of sustainable fisheries, a concept now being adopted internationally.

Listuguj Fisheries is a communal enterprise guided by the responsibility of protecting the bounty of the sea for the next seven generations. The economic benefits from the operations help fund community programs, services, and cultural activities in the Listuguj Mi'gmaq First Nation.

Chaleur Bay

We call it Mawi Paqtapeg, meaning "the biggest bay”, the Chaleur Bay, located between New Brunswick and Quebec, is a prime location for aquaculture due to its unique characteristics.

The bay's shape and geography create tidal currents that bring oxygen and nutrient-rich waters from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, supporting a diverse range of marine life, including salmon, lobster, and mussels. These favorable conditions enable sustainable aquaculture practices that benefit both the local economy and the marine ecosystem.
